Guided tour “Flax, Hemp, and Spinning in the Luxembourg Moselle Valley”

Until the 19th century, linen and hemp played a central role in the rural economy of the Luxembourg Moselle Valley. These plants were cultivated not only for their fibers but also for their oil and their use in textile crafts. They were indispensable to the daily lives of rural communities, providing the essential raw materials for making clothing and household textiles.

The guided tour traces the journey of linen and hemp—from cultivation to their transformation into fabric. It offers insight into traditional craftsmanship techniques that were passed down through generations: retting, spinning, weaving, and other steps requiring precision and deep knowledge. These activities were typically carried out at home or by specialized weavers.

Through archival documents, historical objects, and a vivid demonstration by our guide, you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of how the rural economy functioned and the importance of self-sufficiency in the 19th century, as well as its gradual decline with industrialization.

A fascinating journey through time that brings a little-known artisanal heritage back to life.
