The question of lighting was essential to facilitate daily domestic life. That is why it was necessary to make lighting as accessible and inexpensive as possible.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, several sources of light were available, such as oil lamps, spark holders, or the burning of candles, often made from tallow (animal fat).

Candles could be purchased or made at home. In the latter case, a mold could be used into which tallow was poured after inserting a wick. Once dried, the candle could simply be removed from the mold.
