The Barrel Chain
For a long time, wooden barrels were the main containers used, especially for storing wine. Once the barrel was emptied, impurities often remained on its inner walls. A chain was then used to clean it. First, a few liters of water were added to the barrel, and the chain was inserted through the bunghole. By moving the chain, the interior walls were scraped to remove impurities. The water with the residues was then removed from the barrel.
