History of the Museum

On the initiative of the General Directorate for Tourism, a new museum concept was developed in 2018 as part of a participatory approach and in close collaboration with the region’s tourism, cultural, and community players.

The Museum « A Possen » was founded by Dr. Prosper Kayser and his wife Gaby Kayser-Gales, a couple of collectors with a passion for the history of the Luxembourg Moselle. In 1965, they bought the “Possenhaus” in Bech-Kleinmacher. The house, whose origins date back to 1617, first opened its doors to the public in 1967. Later, additional houses were added to the complex and were combined to form the Museum A Possen. In 1972, the association “Amis du Possenhaus et du Folklore Mosellan A.s.b.l.” was founded to promote the culture and history of Luxembourg’s Moselle region. The in-house restaurant Wäistuff A Possen opened its doors on the premises in 1977 in a friendly and welcoming spirit. Since 1993, the Museum is managed by a Foundation, following an agreement with the State and the municipality of Schengen, with the task of ensuring the conservation of the Museum and promoting of its collection and local heritage.
