Gaby and Prosper Kayser, a passionate couple

The « A Possen » Museum owes its existence to the work of a passionate couple, Gaby (1936–2007) and Prosper (1933–2020) Kayser-Gales. Collectors and lovers of objects and their history, they managed to balance their personal life – they had three children, and Prosper was a professional anesthesiologist and intensivist – with their dream: to share with as many people as possible the emotion and wonder they felt when encountering the most common objects of daily life and their stories.

Throughout their journey, the couple searched, explored, and investigated tirelessly… As tireless researchers, their passion for objects began at a very young age – the young Prosper Kayser left fascinated after visiting the Edouard Wolff Museum of Rustic Art in Vianden on a school trip – and it never diminished over time.

Beyond their work as collectors, they wanted to share and bring their collection to life, to explain and make understandable the living conditions of the inhabitants of the Luxembourg Moselle in the 18th and 19th centuries. Both coming from Moselle families, they became owners of the Post family house in 1965 in Bech-Kleinmacher by a happy coincidence, initially drawn by the beautiful traditional door, “Hierzeldier,” adorning its façade. They chose to make it the showcase for their collection and opened it to the public for the first time in 1967. Prosper also pursued genealogical research and co-published numerous works on the history of families in the Luxembourg Moselle region.

Lovers of people and familiar objects, they gradually transformed the Possenhaus, with the surrounding property acquisitions, into a vibrant living and exhibition space, driven by their shared love of sharing, history, and discovery.

Family histories, names, localities, objects… their work is poetic both in research and execution, defining their rich legacy.
